Who killed Noah Shahnawaz?
Noah Shahnawaz, an officer of the Elwood Police Department, died in the line of duty in the early hours of Sunday.
The Elwood Police Department is hiring 24-year-old Shahnawaz, a five-year military veteran, for eleven months. His family consists of his mother, father and siblings.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Anderson resident Carl Roy Webb Boards II, is charged with preliminary murder. Madison County’s chief deputy prosecutor, Andrew Hanna, said Boards was taken to the Hamilton County Jail and would likely be charged with gun possession as a habitual offender.
Hanna said the board has a long criminal history, including a 2006 conviction for firing a weapon at Indiana state police officers.
About Noah Shahnawaz incident
A 2012 Buick LaCrosse was stopped by Shahnawaz at the junction of Indiana 37 and County Road 1100 North at approximately 2 a.m. The police have not explained the traffic stop.
Board exited the vehicle, fired several rounds, hit Shahnawaz at least once, and then left. Elwood and Madison County police officers searched for the injured Shahnawaz and performed CPR on him until medical help arrived.
In the end, Shahnawaz was brought by ambulance to Ascension St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood, and then by helicopter to a hospital in the Indianapolis area, where he tragically passed away.
At around 2:30 a.m. police in Hamilton County spotted the Buick and tried to pull it over. The car continued south on Indiana 37. Representatives from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office chased the Buick and used a tire deflation device near the intersection of Indiana 37 and 146th Street.
The Buick continued south on IN-37 towards I-69. I-69 in Fissures was the site of two “precision stabilization tactics” used by the police. After the second try the Buick crashed into the mid-handicap wall. With no further incident, the police were able to take the board to the jail.
According to the statement of the state police, at present, the interrogation is going on. Bond was set for Boards on Sunday, so he remained in the Hamilton County Jail.
